Selection Returns to Four Hard Metrics: Imaging, Large-Model Ecosystem, Process Node, and Compliance — Observations on the Ambarella CV7 Platform

Since large AI models became a buzzword across the security industry, an interesting pattern has emerged: the more technically sophisticated the customer, the more the conversation returns to fundamentals. They don't ask how many trends you've chased; they ask four things — does the imaging hold up, can large models really run in production, can the power budget be sustained, and will it pass overseas compliance.

Figure: The four hard metrics for selecting an edge-AI camera platform — only a solution that scores on all four can carry a next-generation product.

These four questions are not arbitrary. Over the past two years, many vendors have paid tuition in "edge AI": some solutions post impressive benchmarks yet turn to noise at night; some claim large-model support, only for customers to discover the porting and adaptation is on them — and it takes months; some can't keep power and heat under control, forcing the whole enclosure to grow a size larger; and still others stall at the finish line, stuck in a deadlock over the target market's cybersecurity certification.

The problems differ, but the root cause is consistent — when selecting a chip platform, they looked at single-dimension specs rather than measuring against a complete set of metrics. Measure the mainstream chip platforms on the market against these four yardsticks, and Ambarella's CV platform deserves a serious look.

Metric 1: Image Quality and Video Encoding — Ambarella's Traditional Strength

Image quality is the foundation of any security camera, and it is Ambarella's widely acknowledged core competency in the industry. This capability is not propped up by a single point technology, but by a complete, systematic image-processing pipeline.

Start with low light. Nighttime and low-light scenes are the main battlefield of security surveillance, and the toughest test of raw imaging skill. Ambarella's CV-series platforms deliver usable imaging down to 0.01 Lux in extreme darkness — roughly the light level of a moonless night with only faint ambient glow. Combined with 3D Motion-Compensated Temporal Filtering (MCTF) for noise reduction, nighttime motion stays clean, free of smearing and blur, preserving critical details such as human figures and license plates.

Now dynamic range. Backlit entrances, abrupt light-dark transitions at tunnel mouths, strong contrast from glass curtain walls in lobbies — these are the "dead zones" for ordinary cameras. Ambarella's high dynamic range (HDR) processing, paired with local tone mapping, keeps highlights from blowing out and shadows from losing detail, preserving information in both extremes within a single frame. Fisheye dewarping and electronic image stabilization come standard across the family.

For camera makers, these are not nice-to-haves — the quality of the input image directly sets the ceiling for all downstream AI recognition. No matter how powerful the large model, feed it a blob of noise and it can only output noise.

As important as imaging is encoding. Surveillance scenes have a characteristic: the picture is static most of the time, with key events occurring only in local regions. Ambarella has optimized bitrate deeply for this trait — static frames automatically reduce bitrate, key regions preserve quality individually (ROI), temporal scalable coding (SVC-T), backed by efficient H.264/H.265 multi-stream output.

At the same 4K quality, storage and bandwidth costs are saved many times over. On a project of a thousand-plus channels, the storage investment saved over a few years is a very substantial sum.

Worth noting, Ambarella continues to enhance its image-processing pipeline with neural networks (the AI-ISP direction), pushing night-scene and HDR performance even higher. This is an ongoing bonus — the foundation of the imaging metric is already rock-solid.

Metric 2: Large-Model Support — "It Runs" and "It's Easy to Deploy" Are Two Different Things

This is the most-watched item in this round of platform upgrades, and the one where vendor claims are densest and most in need of being squeezed dry.

First, the facts. Ambarella has completed native adaptation of 30+ mainstream AI large models around its CVflow toolchain, covering mainstream open-source models such as LLaMA. In public demos, inference models like DeepSeek, along with vision-language models such as CLIP and LLaVA, have run live on the chip family — text search, image search, and natural-language retrieval of surveillance footage, capabilities that once required the cloud, now run at the edge. (The full model list is provided under a cooperative confidentiality framework.)

Now, squeezing out the water. The window paper that needs puncturing: the versions of these models running on-chip are all lightweight, distilled variants — every vendor is the same here, none special. The real difference lies elsewhere: "factory-completed adaptation" versus "customer self-adaptation" carry completely different costs.

  • Factory Adaptation

: Customers receive a model library optimized and validated by the factory; selection is deployment — what's saved are the most painful, time-consuming steps: model porting, quantization, and operator tuning.

  • Self-Adaptation

: every model must be ported and tuned from scratch; one model eating weeks of a senior engineer's time is the norm, and thirty models add up to a visible R& D bill.

Self-Adaptation Path

Starts in Months · Window Already Lost

Figure: "It runs" and "It's easy to deploy" are two paths with completely different costs

For product teams racing the market window, this gap is not an experience issue but a schedule issue. While others are still porting models, your product is already in system integration testing.

There's also an often-overlooked ecosystem advantage: all Ambarella chip families share the same CVflow architecture and Cooper development platform, so one AI application can be deployed from mainstream models all the way to flagship models, even to a local AI hub. One algorithm asset, reused across the entire product line — which changes the logic of product-line planning entirely.

Metric 3: Advanced Process and Low Power — Hard Metrics Technical Customers Care About

Process node is the hardest metric to dress up in the chip world — the process is written into the silicon, and cannot be faked. Ambarella's new-generation CV family comprehensively adopts advanced process nodes: the main platforms use 5nm; the flagship CV7, freshly unveiled at CES in January 2026, goes further with 4nm, with official data showing about 20% lower power at equivalent load versus the previous generation, and samples are now available.

Power figures may seem abstract to end users, but they are very concrete to product definers. A camera is a device mounted on poles, in corners, and in server rooms 7×24 — and power directly ties to four accounts:

Thermal Account

Low power · Less thermal stress

Smaller, thinner enclosure

Reliability Account

Less heat · Lower failure rate

Fanless sealed designs

Environment Account

High temp · Outdoor · In-vehicle

Performance per Watt · Architecture Built for the Edge

For a veteran vision-chip vendor like Ambarella, built on "performance per watt," advanced process paired with an architecture designed specifically for the edge is its consistent technical route — this generation's 4nm is a natural extension of that path.

Metric 4: Compliance and Security — The Ticket to Overseas Markets

OEM vendors targeting overseas markets all know: cybersecurity compliance has shifted from a bonus to a hard threshold, and that threshold keeps rising. The security foundation at the solution level often decides whether a deal can even be discussed, earlier than any single performance spec.

At the solution level, Ambarella's CV platform aligns with mainstream international cybersecurity standards such as OWASP: a secure boot chain starting from the first line of code at power-on, a trusted execution environment, hardware-level key protection, and storage and memory protection — the entire security design is systematized and validated by internationally authoritative cybersecurity certifications.

The practical meaning for customers: building a finished product on a validated solution security baseline raises the starting point of compliance verification. Certification cycles, remediation rounds, and the communication cost with target-market regulators are all compressed from the source. For vendors targeting North America and other markets with the strictest compliance demands, this is especially critical — here, compliance capability is not a technical metric, it is market access.

Beyond a Good Platform: Between Chip and Product Lies an Engineering Gap

Selecting the chip platform completes only one third of the work. Between a design on paper and a product on the shelf lies a full engineering gap: thermal and mechanical design must contain the heat of sustained full-load operation; the ISP must be tuned sensor by sensor and lens by lens to convert the platform's imaging capability into real-world picture quality; the customer's own algorithms must be ported, optimized, and stabilized; overseas-bound products must clear round after round of international compliance; and finally, the gate no vendor escapes — mass-production yield and component supply assurance.

Big players staff teams to walk this road themselves, at the cost of time and headcount; more customers who have algorithm capability and brand channels but lack a hardware engineering bench take another path: handing the engineering realization of the chip platform to an ODM partner that has thoroughly mastered the Ambarella solution.

Low-level adaptation · Cert. support · Mass production

Joint development · Fill the gaps · Protect the customer's lead value
Figure: Joint-development division of labor — the customer does what they're strong at, FSAN covers the weak spots

Shenzhen FSAN's position on this road is clear: as a long-term strategic partner of Ambarella, it has developed solutions on Ambarella's full chip family for nearly two decades, covering the complete tier from mainstream to flagship. Past engineering accumulations can be systematically migrated to the new generation via the unified CVflow toolchain — shortening the customer's pre-research cycle and trial-and-error cost from here.

On the collaboration model, FSAN's stance is joint development and gap-filling execution: the customer focuses on their own algorithms, brand, and product definition, while FSAN takes on and executes steadily the heaviest, most fragmented engineering steps — hardware design, mechanical development, low-level adaptation, certification support, and SMT mass production. For technically capable customers with in-house R& D, this "you do your strength, I cover your gaps" division beats a full turnkey approach in project efficiency and better protects the customer's lead value in the project.

Backing this promise are hard conditions: a self-owned manufacturing system totaling about 17,500 m² across the Shenzhen main manufacturing center and the Huizhou base; an outgoing pass rate consistently above 99.8%, with quality renowned throughout the industry and among global customers — many customers, after comparing peers, keep their orders here; years of accumulated component channels and alternative solutions ensure maximum delivery even in exceptional times of chip shortages and logistics restrictions; and certifications such as UL/FCC/CE, ONVIF are supported end-to-end for customers. No inflated specs, no exaggerated performance — this is FSAN's most plain yet hardest card to play outward.

Conclusion: The Window Is Open

CV7 samples are available, CV75S/CV72S are in place on the public product line, and the N1 family fills the local-AI-hub option. The moment the family matrix is complete is the moment to kick off next-generation product definition. By the historical CV-series cadence from sample to volume production, customers starting pre-research now will catch the first market window — waiting until competitors' finished products appear before following means a completely different cost.
